Jane Austen fanfiction sequels, prequels and continuations have grown widely in popularity over the last few years as a direct response to new readership and devotees to the classic novels of Jane Austen.

The sudden increase in JA followers has been directly attributed to recent film adaptations of her work. Beginning with much loved BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, which starred Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle in 1995, and then later the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film version with Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen. With the popularity and success of these two films, and the more recently released Becoming Jane and the Jane Austen Book Club, an ambitious project was then undertaken by PBS for Masterpiece theatre to film new adaptations of several of her other novels.

 Masterpiece Theater went beyond the more recent versions of Pride and Prejudice, to begin focus on Austen’s other popular works:  Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey. In addition they added a new film Miss Austen Regretsas a semibiographical depiction Of Jane Austen’s life and career. The series ran on PBS weekly for two months in early 2008. The result has been staggering, with the popularity of the classic novels spawning a whole new group of devoted fans. From the devout, passionate group of followers have come thousands of well written sequels for every major novel.
